Wittmann Winery
"Winemaking is always a generational contract." The Wittmanns and their ancestors have been making wine in Westhofen, Rheinhessen, for around 350 years and 15 generations. The winery has been certified organic since 1990.
Stuart Pigott attested a "tsunami of fresh fruit' to the 2022 vintage of the Aulerde from the Wittmann winery and awarded an impressive 96 points. The top location, which is often unjustly overshadowed by the nearby Morstein, is characterised by its southern exposure and heavy clay marl interspersed with limestone and loess. The vines on Wittmann's plots are around 70 years old, and their roots are correspondingly deep - surely the explanation for the deep, fine, salty minerality that characterises the Rieslings from the Aulerde. All of this comes together with great finesse and precision to create a supple yet full-bodied, racy whole. A wolf - no, not in sheep's clothing - in a velvet coat!
