Mount Mary Vineyard
The Yarra Valley, in southeast Australia, east of Melbourne. In the 1850s, Swiss settlers recognised the climatic parallels to Burgundy and Bordeaux and planted the first vines. The Mount Mary winery has been here since 1972.
45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec and 4% Petit Verdot form the basis for a wine that neither wants to nor can deny its great Bordeaux role model. And yet it shows great stylistic independence: This can be seen, for example, in the approximately 25% of the cuvée that is not aged in barriques but in large oak barrels. Only 30% is aged in new wood, the rest in 2 to 4-year-old barriques. This resulted in a "claret' of beguiling elegance with the 2018 vintage. With expressive fruit - especially cherry, cassis and plum - and silky-soft wood flavours. In addition, finely polished tannins that, despite their accessibility, already promise considerable ageing potential. James Suckling awarded this impressive 2018 wine 99 points.
