Franz Hirtzberger Winery
The Hirtzberger family has been producing wines in Spitz in the Wachau for five generations. The Grand Cru from the Singerriedel, Hochrain and Honigvogl vineyards are among the best that Austrian viticulture has to offer.
Gneiss, mica and slate, with some earth on top, characterise the soils at the Rote Tor - a Wachau landmark dating back to the 30 Years' War. Hirtzberger's Federspiel - the quality level that can be roughly compared to the German Kabinett - offers plenty of freshness and finesse, apple and pear fruit, some apricot, herbal tones, citric notes and plenty of minerality. All of this with an almost dancing lightness and enormously seductive drinking flow. A Veltliner that will cut a fine figure as an aperitif for a barbecue on the terrace as well as with fried chicken or Wiener schnitzel.
