Franz Hirtzberger Winery
The Hirtzberger family has been producing wines in Spitz in the Wachau for five generations. The Grand Cru from the Singerriedel, Hochrain and Honigvogl vineyards are among the best that Austrian viticulture has to offer.
Grüner Veltliner is Austria's indigenous white wine grape variety with the greatest potential - in Franz Hirtzberger's "Honivogl' it regularly finds its perfect realisation. The 2023 is incredibly powerful and juicy, yet anything but clumsy, and despite its unbridled juicy power, it has impressive precision and silky elegance. Yellow tropical fruit is paired here with honeydew melon and hints of blossom honey - smoke and a little tobacco add complexity and depth. Salty minerality and fine acidity round off the almost perfect flavour. There are certainly other great Grüner Veltliners - but hardly any better!
