Autumn is also the time for cosy get-togethers, when the wind blows outside and the leaves sweep through the air, while we can think about hot, soul-warming dishes and a few darker, more dignified red wines. We've picked out a few of them for you and provide possible food pairings for each.
Let's start with a classic "food pairing" from Italian cuisine:
Osso Buco with a Piedmontese wine, in this case we have opted for a Michele Chiarlo "Barolo Cerequio" 2019 , although the Mazzei "Philip" 2019 from Tuscany would also be an excellent match.
However, this single-varietal Cabernet Sauvignon would be our choice for an eight-hour roast lamb, as would the 2012 Château Haut Ferrand . The leg of lamb is rubbed with salt, pepper and olive oil - without searing - and placed in a heavy roasting tin. Add the carrots, onion, bouquet garni, water and wine, cover the roasting tin with batter and simply forget about it for a few hours. Although this will be difficult if the vapours eventually drift through the flat.
The Viñedo Chadwick Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 would also be a good choice here, but we recommend slow-cooked, lightly smoked ribs or a roasted fillet of beef, simply served with coleslaw and jacket potatoes.
That leaves two more classics: Bœuf Bourguignon and Coq au Vin with Pinot Noir. Either from the heart of Burgundy in the form of a fragrant Domaine Faiveley Mercurey La Framboisière Monopole Village 2018, or from the southern Palatinate with a 2020 Münzberg Godramstein Kalkgestein Pinot Noir.
