Spain as a wine-growing country

Many different grape varieties are grown in Spain, with the percentage distribution varying depending on the region and growing conditions. However, the most important grape varieties are Tempranillo, Garnacha, Monastrell and Albariño. Tempranillo is the most frequently cultivated grape variety and accounts for around 20% of the total area under cultivation, followed by Garnacha with around 18%, Monastrell with
around 10% and Albariño with around 7% (as of 2021).

The country has different climate zones, from maritime and cool in the north to continental and hot in the south.

The history of wine growing in Spain goes back a long way, to the time of the Phoenicians and Romans, who introduced viticulture to the region. Today, Spain is the third largest wine producer in the world and is known for its outstanding wines.

The quality grading of Spanish wines is regulated by the "Denominación de Origen" (DO) system, which works in a similar way to the French appellation system. The different quality levels are:

  • Vino de Mesa (table wine)
  • Vino de la Tierra (country wine)
  • Vino de Calidad con Indicación Geográfica (wine with a geographical designation of origin)
  • Denominación de Origen (Protected Designation of Origin)
  • Denominación de Origen Calificada (qualified protected designation of origin)
  • Vino de Pago (wine from single vineyard sites)

Artazu Bodegas y Viendos

Since 1996, winemaker Juan Carlos López de Lacalle has been running the over 100-year-old winery in Artazu in the Navarra region, breathing new life into the "worn-out vineyards", the "almost lost heritage". His focus is on terroir-driven, single-varietal Grenache wines.

Bodegas Alvear

Bodegas Alvear has been producing wines from the vineyards of the Andalusian region of Montilla-Moriles for more than 300 years. The Alvear family has been based in Montilla-Moriles since the beginning of the 18th century. The dynasty was founded by Diego de Alvear y Escalera.

Bodegas La Horra Corimbo

Behind the name Bodegas La Horra is none other than the well-known duo Mario Rotlant and Carmen Daurella, who founded the now legendary Bodegas RODA in Rioja in 1991.

Tempos Vega Sicilia

Tempos Vega Sicilia is an internationally successful company based in Spain Behind which stands the Alvarez family. in 1982, they took over Bodegas Vega Sicilia in Valbuena de Duero, one of the oldest wineries in the country, and developed it into a name that now stands for top quality worldwide. Since 1992, further wineries have been successively acquired.
