Baigorri Winery

Buy wines of Weingut Baigorri

The Baigorri winery is one of the most interesting and sophisticated in Rioja Alavesa, where grapes from excellent vineyards are transformed into wines full of character.
Founded in 2002, Baigorri has risen over the years to become one of the best wineries in Rioja Alavesa. It is located in Samaniego at an altitude of 600 metres. Depending on which side you approach the winery from, you will only see a glass pavilion or some kind of staircase, representing the eight levels that the winery houses. Designed by Iñaki Aspiazu Iza, it is now one of the architectural landmarks of the region. But why does this matter to us? Because this winery was not built for the sake of appearances, but rather as a shell for a perfect wine-making process, which is moved here entirely and exclusively by gravity. No pumping over necessary!

Instead, the gentle processing of grapes that have already been meticulously cared for in the vineyards. This fulfils the aspirations of president Pedro Martínez Hernández and cellar master Simón Arina Robles, who want to produce unadulterated terroir wines.
These are the wines of Rioja Alavesa, the Basque and northernmost part of the Rioja wine-growing region. The soils here are characterised by calcareous clay and limestone. Winter and spring are fresh and rather humid in the Atlantic, while summer and autumn are hot and dry in the Mediterranean. The result is wines with clarity, presence, pure fruit and a sensual concentration that is supported by a lively acidity. Preserving all of this can be experienced in this exemplary cellar. From the fruity young wine, the "Negu", to single-vineyard wines such as the "Finca la Quintanilla", very pure, clear, groundbreaking Riojans are produced here.
