Château Kirwan belongs to the 3ième Grand Cru Classé de Margaux and has been owned since the 1920s by the Schÿler family, who moved from Hamburg to Bordeaux in the 18th century to become successful wine merchants.
Château Kirwan was also founded at the same time. The unusual name - it is the only one in the extensive Bordeaux index that begins with "K" - goes back to its founder. Mark Kirwan came from Ireland, was a merchant in Bordeaux and married the daughter of Bordeaux merchant Sir John Collingwood. The couple were given the Lasalle wine estate, which Kirwan then gave his own name. As part of the 1855 classification, it was elevated to the status of a 3ième Grand Cru Classé de Margaux. After being owned by the city of Bordeaux for some time, the estate was acquired by Jean Henri Schÿler l. in 1925. He came from the former Hamburg merchant family, who founded the Bordeaux wine trading house Schröder & Schÿler in the 18th century with the Schröder family from Lübeck, which still exists today.

The 35 hectares on the plateau of Cantenac are used 50% each for the first growth and for the second wine „Charmes de Kirwan“. Kirwan was classic Margaux for a long time, but then had a „Parker Rolland phase“ with a much more powerful style. Since the arrival of Philippe Delfaut, who worked at Palmer for a long time, the style has gradually changed towards finesse. Since his arrival, he has had the entire 35 hectares analysed for their specific terroir, divided the vineyard into parcels and fermented and matured each parcel individually, for which a cellar with 35 fermenters was created in 2015. The meticulous work has paid off. Today, the wines are once again timelessly elegant and do justice to their status as 3ième Cru.
