The 22-hectare Château L'Evangile is located on the border with St. Emilion, right between Château Cheval Blanc and Petrus. It belongs to a small group of privileged wine estates on the Pomerol plateau, the best terroir in the appellation.
First mentioned in a document in 1741, the château has had a chequered history. Paul Chaperon, who acquired the estate in 1862 and whose heirs, the Ducasse family, ran the estate until 1990, was to play a decisive role in winegrowing in Pomerol. in 1868, Château L'Evangile was classified as a "Premier Cru de Haut-Pomerol" in the second edition of Cocks & Féret, a reference work for Bordeaux vineyards that is still important today. Although the Pomerol appellation does not have a classification today, this distinction already demonstrated the importance of this wine at the time...and still does today. Interestingly, it was the year in which James de Rothschild bought a certain Château Lafite in Pauillac, which is now the owner of Château L'Evangile.
The vines (79% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon) are rooted in a special mixture of gravel, clay and sand. The wine is now produced purely organically.
It is a very typical and distinctive expression of the Pomerol appellation. The wines are always powerful with lush fruit of plums and dark berries, characterised by elegant and silky tannins and the floral finesse that makes Château L'Evangile so sought-after all over the world.
When you have this great Chilean in your glass, you can really feel it all. Sena is always characterised by a fine elegance. Polished tannins and intense berry flavours give the wine a noble sophistication.
