On the border between Breisgau and Markgräfler Land, not far from the Alsatian border, lies Heitersheim with the Joseph Walz winery. It can look back on 300 years of winemaking tradition.

Today, the winery is run by Thomas Walz, who produces wines from around 17 hectares together with his team led by field manager Matthias Müller and cellar master Felix Vogelbacher. A few years ago, he converted the winery to organic farming, so that today all wines from the estate's own vineyards are certified.

Thomas Walz cultivates the classic Markgräfler grape varieties. These mainly include Chasselas and Pinot Noir, but also Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris. His parade sites are the Badenweiler Römerberg, the Heitersheim Maltesergarten and the Zunzinger Rosenberg.
In addition to the winery, you should definitely visit the associated inn „Zum Schiff“. It was opened in 1712 and is a landmark of the region. The ship also gives its name to the flagship wines - the estate's best wines. They mature in large and small wooden barrels in the temperature-controlled flagship cellar.
