the famous Paul Jaboulet Ainé estate was founded in Tain l'Hermitage in 1834. It became world-famous thanks to the legendary cuvée "Hermitage La Chapelle" from one of the best terroirs for Syrah in the world. The fabulous 1961 is one of the most expensive wines of the last century.
Most of Jaboulet's vineyards are located in the northern part of the growing region. It is very different from the southern part. While only the Syrah grape variety is used here in the red wine segment (which accounts for by far the largest proportion), the southern Rhône wines are mainly made up of cuvées dominated by Syrah, Grenache and Mouvèdre.
Up here around the small town of Tain l'Hermitage, where the famous Valrona chocolate also comes from, numerous red and white wines are produced on the best terroirs of the northern Rhône, including Crozes Hermitage, St. Joseph and Condrieu. The wines from the legendary Hermitage vineyard are at the top of the range.
According to legend, the crusader Gaspard de Sterimberg settled here as a hermit (hence the name (H)Ermitage) and built the chapel that gave the wine „La Chapelle“ its name. The white Hermitage „Chevalier de Sterimberg“, made from the Marsanne and Rousanne grape varieties, was named after him.
In 2006, the current owner and oenologist Caroline Frey took over the reins and led the winery into the future. Among other things, biodynamics was gradually introduced out of respect for nature and to ensure sustainability. Today, the wines are extremely precise and complex and a great embodiment of the terroir and the vines.
