Josef Milz Winery

The Josef Milz winery is one of the oldest in Germany and has been run in Trittenheim on the Moselle for 16 generations. The founding member of the VDP has outstanding vineyards with 90% steep slopes and 80% old vines.

The year was 1520, when Fernando Magellan had just sailed around the world, Metz Cathedral was completed after 300 years of construction and Pope Leo X threatened Martin Luther with excommunication, while he himself was duped by the English King Henry VIII, who founded the English state church. In addition to the big stories, there were also small ones, such as the one in which a Mr Josef Milz founded a winery in Trittenheim on the Moselle - which still bears his name today. After 16 generations of Milz, there was a decisive change in 2018. As there was no Milz in sight to continue running the winery, the family found Sebastian Schmidtke, who brought a breath of fresh air to the winery. Schmidtke is one of the newcomers to the Moselle who are increasingly changing the image of Moselle wine. He is neither a qualified winemaker nor a trained sommelier, but has acquired in-depth knowledge of wine and viticulture through many years of working in various wineries.
