The famous Rheingau vineyard near Geisenheim was first mentioned in a document in 817, when Emperor Ludwig the Pious acquired vineyards from Fulda Abbey. For more than 300 years, the vineyards have been planted exclusively with Riesling. Johannisberg is considered to be the first closed Riesling vineyard in the world.
The vineyard is 50 hectares in size, south-facing and characterised by quartzite. With a slope of 45 degrees, the hill stretches up to 182 metres and offers the grapes perfect exposure to the sun.
Strong differences between day and night temperatures support the development of the particularly aromatic and flavourful Riesling components.

The top Rieslings are matured in wooden barrels, which gives them their special structure. The material for the barrels comes from the nearby Schlosswald forest.
In the heart of the underground castle cellar is the famous treasure chamber of Johannisberg Castle - the 'Bibliotheca Subterranea'. More than 25,000 precious wines are stored in the 900-year-old abbey cellar.
The conditions here are ideal for them to mature over centuries. The oldest wine dates back to 1748.
