Why we celebrate Valentine's Day
with English Sparkling

With some public holidays, it is often not entirely clear how they actually came about. Valentine's Day, for example, goes back to Saint Valentine and was once a Christian holiday. However, it was removed from the general calendar of the Roman Catholic Church in 1969. St Valentine is said to have married Roman soldiers at a time when Christianity was still forbidden in Rome. Accordingly, he was executed. In a way, however, love was already the origin of this holiday back then.

However, it only became romanticised in the 14th century, specifically in England. The tradition of courtly love flourished there and there was someone who was able to put it into words like no other at the time. It was Geoffrey Chaucer, the author of the famous Canterbury Tales. It became customary for lovers to give each other sweets and flowers and send greetings cards, the so-called "Valentines". However, this holiday only came to Germany in a roundabout way: with the US soldiers stationed in the country after the Second World War. Today, however, the day is celebrated all over the world. After all, what better way to honour love?

What are your plans for Valentine's Day? Are you cooking for someone you want to treat to a special evening? Are you opening a special wine? We honour Valentine's Day with one or two special sparkling wines from the land of Geoffrey Chaucer. Because that's where some excellent English sparkling wines come from!

Nyetimber Classic Cuvée

The standard cuvée made from the three champagne grape varieties Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier delights with its fine perlage and subtle flavours of almonds, biscuits, honey and baked apple. This is guaranteed on the one hand by the legendary terroir in Sussex, Hampshire and Kent, which is very similar to that in Champagne, and on the other hand by the high proportion of reserve wines and the long yeast ageing of at least 36 months.

The harmonious intensity and fine elegance of this classic cuvée make it an experience that is not just for special occasions.

Gusbourne Estate Rosé 2018

A perfect evening can begin with this rosé. But the English Sparkling also looks great during the day. The cuvée of 54% Chardonnay, 36% Pinot Noir and 10% Pinot Meunier is a charming, lustful, fearless sparkler in the brut range. It smells of strawberries, raspberries and peaches. There are also delicately spicy notes, freshness, a mineral pressure and a fine mousseux. The rosé is a great soloist as well as an accompaniment to fine dishes, such as salmon canapés. A sparkling wine like an endless summer.
