Penfolds Magill Estate Shiraz 2013
With the 2013 "Magill Estate", the name says it all. The Shiraz comes from Magill Estate, the vineyard where the unique history of Penfolds began in 1844. The vineyard on the eastern edge of Adelaide is not very large, which is why there are just 1,200 cases of this wine. Not much for a worldwide fan community. The deep purple-red wine has an intense aroma of plums and cherries, some peppermint, vanilla, lavender and cola with cedar and pepper. On the palate, the wine is expressive and intense, concentrated and opulent, yet fresh and absolutely precise. "The best Magill Estate ever? It's certainly the best I've ever tasted," writes Lisa Perrotti-Brown in her 96-point rating for Robert Parker.
