Spottswoode Estate
The roots of what is now Spottswoode Estate in St Helena in the Napa Vallay go back to 1872, when German settlers originally bought land for a summer residence and planted the first vines.
Small but very fine - that is probably the shortest possible characterisation of Spottswoode in Napa Valley. The estate has existed for over 40 years, has been certified organic for over 30 years and now works biodynamically. The cuvee for the 2019 "Estate Cabernet Sauvignon' is not 90%, but 89.5%. The decimal place - a sign of the enormous attention to detail that goes into vinification at Spottswoode. 6.5% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot complete the blend. Thanks to extremely careful work, this cuvée produces an incredibly exciting and complex wine. Not loudly rumbling - like quite a few of its wood-steeped premium competitors in Napa - but full of finesse. It offers everything you could wish for from a great Cabernet - in endless layers of fine aromas.
