Football and wine -
the big duels of the 2024 European Championship preliminary round

One thing is clear: football and wine meet as rarely as a visit to the opera and a can of beer .

But it's not impossible. And what's more, many footballing nations are also major wine-producing countries. And if you look more closely, wine is even produced in every country taking part in the European Championships.

The major wine-producing nations are, of course, Spain, Italy and France. They are followed by Romania, Germany, Austria, Hungary and Croatia. Serbia, Albania, Slovenia and Switzerland have also been wine-growing nations for a long time. There are many wineries in Poland, as well as in England. The fact that the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark have also been producing wine since the 1970s and 1980s is still little known. And there are even wineries in Scotland.

So why not try a wine duel while the football is on? It's difficult on the fan mile, but it's great at home. We've put together a few duels from the preliminary round for you. After all, Austria faces France and Spain meets Italy. We've come up with something very special for the match between England and Slovenia.

2019 Tement Morillon Muschelkalk

Probably the most famous producer in southern Styria, the Tement winery is not only celebrated for its Sauvignon Blancs, but also for its excellent Chardonnays, which are called Morillon in Styria, grow on special shell limestone soils and are therefore sometimes more "Burgundian" than their great role model in the Côtes de Beaune itself.

The unique terroir provides an enormous minerality, depth and tension, which leads to a complex, lemony-salty finish!

2021 JUBILUM Grenache

Louis and Cherry Barruol run the famous Saint Cosme vineyard in Gigondas. It is undoubtedly one of the best wine estates on the Rhône and has been in the family since the 15th century. For the "Jubilum", the Barruols have opted for a single-varietal Grenache. And this is rarely found among the wines of the Côtes du Rhône.

But what a beautiful example it is, with its deep, ripe fruit of wild strawberries, raspberries and blackberries mingling with garrigue, liquorice and warm forest floor. From the very first sip, you can feel the combination of cool rock and warm fruit, sun-dried herbs of Provence and liquorice in this juicy, spicy and entertaining all-rounder.

Spain:
2019 Marco Abella "Mas Mallola"

The 2019 "Mas Mallola" from Marco Abella beautifully reflects the terroir of the best vineyards of this Priorat winery. Today, the estate comprises 41 hectares of vineyards in Porrera, spread across seven terroirs. All are characterised by different slate formations, the most important of which is Llicotella, the liquorice-coloured black slate. The cool flavours of the slate soils provide plenty of freshness, minerality and harmony. The elegant, silky dark berry fruit and ripe acidity create a beautiful balance.

Italy:
2020 Castello di Ama "Chianti Classico Ama"

Hardly any other winery has characterised Tuscan winemaking in recent years as much as Castello di Ama. With its top vineyards, it has created a system that is comparable to the Grand Crus in Burgundy. Even the "Chianti Classico Ama" is a prime example of the wonderful flavour of the Sangiovese grape (96% in the cuvée). The soft tannins and juicy black fruit flavours with an underlying minerality make for fascinating Tuscan enjoyment!

Nyetimber "Classic Cuvée"

The standard cuvée made from the three Champagne grape varieties Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier delights with its fine perlage and subtle flavours of almonds, biscuits, honey and baked apple. This is guaranteed on the one hand by the terroir in Sussex, Hampshire and Kent, which is very similar to that of Champagne, and on the other hand by the high proportion of reserve wines and the long yeast ageing of at least 36 months.

The harmonious intensity and fine elegance of this "Classic Cuvée" make it an experience to be savoured not only on special occasions.

2021 Vino Gross "Iglic Haloze"

Champions League level from Slovenia? Sounds pretentious. Not at all. Take heart - you don't get 94 Parker points for nothing ...

In the immediate vicinity of southern Styria, where the other part of the Gross family has been producing outstanding wines for a long time, the Vino Gross winery produces spectacular wines, primarily from the Sauvignon Blanc, Furmint and Welschriesling varieties. The pure Furmint in particular, which grows on the limestone terraces of the Iglic high plateau, impresses with its complex aromas of ripe stone fruit (pear and quince) with a hint of honey and mint.

The almost vibrant acidity and salty minerality almost leave you speechless!
