Subscription 2023

How do I "subscribe" to wine in the "Primeur de Bordeaux"?

Every year, the new vintage from Bordeaux, probably the most famous wine-growing region in the world, is offered "en Primeur".

What does this actually mean, how can I purchase the wines and what advantages do I have as a Bordeaux lover from this "subscription"?

First of all, these terms mean that the respective vintage (currently 2023) is offered in a pre-sale. Traders from all over the world were at the so-called Primeur Week at the end of April and tasted the newly offered 2023 vintage at various tastings or directly at the châteaux. This is the only opportunity to taste the vintage in advance.

Subsequently, all wines offered by subscription are sold all over the world via the negociants, the official distributors in Bordeaux.

There is only one issue price, i.e. everyone buys there under the same conditions and then offers it to their customers.

As the wines are still maturing at this time, the quantities on offer are purchased now and the wine is delivered in the bottle around two years later.

There are two main reasons for buying "en primeur":

  1. For reasons of planning security, the château sells the vintage at a more favourable en primeur price. This price advantage is passed on to the customer right through to the end consumer. As a rule, this is the most favourable price at which the private customer can buy.
  2. Every year, there are some wines that are highly sought-after due to their prestige, small quantity or exceptional performance. Buying by subscription gives you the opportunity to get hold of these wines. Later, on the secondary market, they are usually offered for much higher sums.

At Pese Wein, we use these criteria to select exactly which wines we believe are desirable and offer our customers the best price/enjoyment experience.

The 2023 vintage is ideal for subscription. The quality is exceptional. The wines are not quite as concentrated as in the previous year and, with animating, ripe acidity and elegant fruit, are made for early drinking maturity and are also offered at prices that are on a par with the 2019 pandemic vintage at most châteaux, making them 30 to 50 % cheaper than the 2022 vintage.

The best is saved for last:
the Duclot Collection Case

As always, the Duclot Collection Case comes at the end. This has been a tradition for years and contains a bottle of each of the four Premiers offered in the Primeur from the Médoc (Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Mouton Rothschild, Château Margaux and Château Haut Brion), the former sole Premiers A from St. Emilion (Château Ausone and Château Cheval Blanc), the only Premiers Superieur from Sauternes Château Yquem and Château La Mission Haut Brion in a very special case. Plus a bottle of Petrus!
