Austria as a wine-growing country

Austria offers a large number of vineyards for different grape varieties. Grüner Veltliner is the dominant grape variety with around 30% of the cultivated area, followed by Welschriesling (8%), Zweigelt (13%) and Blaufränkisch (6%). Other important grape varieties are Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Gemischter Satz and St. Laurent.

Map of Austria's wine-growing regions

Austria's climate is characterised by continental influences, with cold winters, warm summers and sufficient rainfall, which leads to a long ripening period and a high concentration of fruit in the grapes.

The quality pyramid of Austrian wines is organised as follows:

  • At the top are the wines labelled "DAC" (Districtus Austriae Controllatus), which must fulfil the strictest quality criteria and are typical of their region of origin.
  • Below these are the quality wines, which receive a state test number seal after testing the sensory and chemical parameters.
  • This is followed by the country wines, which also have to fulfil certain quality requirements, but meet less stringent criteria.
  • Finally, there are table wines, which do not have to fulfil any particular geographical or quality requirements.

Sattlerhof

When it was first mentioned in a document in 1886, the current Sattlerhof in Gamlitz was a rural farm. Today, it has developed into one of the top wineries in southern Styria, with an excellent gourmet restaurant and hotel attached. The family's inner attitude towards the product and their closeness to nature still derive from a "rural" way of doing business in the best sense of the word.

Domäne Wachau

Domäne Wachau, under the management of Roman Horvath and Heinz Frischengruber, is not only one of the most important wine estates in Austria, but also an association of over 40 winegrowers and winegrowing families.

Malat Winery

The history of the Malat winery in Kremstal dates back to the 18th century. This means almost 300 years of wine knowledge, from which Michael Malat still benefits today: "Because every vintage is different, there is no recipe. When it comes to upcoming decisions, the experiences of the predecessors are very helpful. Maybe someone had a similar situation, tried something - and the result is handed down."

Paul Achs Winery

Since 1664, everything in the Achs family has revolved around viticulture. Since 1990, Paul Achs Junior has been running the winery on the northern shores of Lake Neusiedl and has expanded it from 12 to 25 hectares of cultivated land. The vineyards are located around Gols and are spread over 40 parcels of land whose very different potential is consistently exploited.
