The Boizel family
Boizel is one of the most renowned family businesses in Champagne. founded in 1834 in Épernay by Julie and Auguste Boizel, married couples have been at the helm of the company for almost 200 years. Since 2010, the brothers Florent and Lionel Roques-Boizels, the sixth generation, have been at work.
The company is also characterised by its entrepreneurial spirit and innovative spirit. The founders were originally pâtissiers (although some of them had a history of winemaking in the family) and boldly changed careers.
The first vintages were mainly shipped to England, as London had an immense thirst for champagne. Boizel produced its first brut in the 1870s - at a time when a high residual sweetness was common. Innovative vinification techniques were used early on. The house was also at the forefront with the first Blancs de Blancs in 1929. There are still a few bottles from this vintage in the Tresor cellar today. in 1990, Evelyne and Christophe Roques-Boizels created the "Sous Bois" cuvée. Traditional methods were deliberately revived with fermentation in old oak barrels.
The seven hectares of vineyards are located in the heart of Champagne, mainly in Avize and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. The vineyards are characterised by diverse terroirs and are traditionally planted with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier. For Florent and Lionel Roques-Boizel, it is important to consciously cultivate the differences between the parcels and to utilise them optimally for each cuvée. In addition, high-quality grapes are sourced from partners: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the Côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims as well as Meunier from the Vallée de la Marne.
In the cellar, each parcel is vinified separately in small tanks. This provides a wide and differentiated range of flavours for the subsequent blending. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks and barrels. The subsequent malolactic fermentation provides the typical brioche flavour. The ageing period of the cuvées varies from at least three years for the "Joyau de France" to fifteen years for the "Collection Trésor".
