"What a privilege to be a winemaker."

State-of-the-art technology in the cellar and digital distribution - a lot has changed in the life of a winemaker. But what is and remains the most important thing for Gerhard Markowitsch: The daily immersion in nature and experiencing how new "individual wine personalities" are constantly being created.
The vineyards of the Upper Austrian winery are located in Göttlesbrunn and Höflein, in the Carnuntum growing region, close to the Slovakian border. The vines grow in this gently rolling landscape on a diverse soil structure of sand, clay, limestone and Danube gravel. They benefit from the interplay of dryness and cooling from the Danube floodplains. Air masses constantly flow from a passage between the Alps and the Carpathians and quickly dry out the low rainfall.
A few years ago, Carnuntum's winegrowers focused on complex, cross-vineyard cuvées, but today the trend is towards more terroir-driven, purist wines. Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Grüner Veltliner are among the grape varieties typical of the region (DAC) - and thus part of the Markowitsch range.
„We don't shape the character of our wines, we affirm it and bring to the fore those qualities that are valuable,“ says Gerhard Markowitsch, describing his personal ideal, for which care, balance and patience are essential.
