The 2012 "Grange" is similar in type to the 2010. So it is perhaps not surprising that it - like the 2010 - was awarded 99 points by JAMES HALLIDAY and ROBERT PARKER. There is the earthy and fleshy bouquet with lots of dark fruit, aniseed, olive tapenade and cassis. There is also Christmas cake and Indian spices as well as a lot of wood with vanilla and coconut, which is still very present. On the palate, this is a hedonistic, full-bodied wine with plenty of blackberry, cherry and blueberry fruit, spices and a stunningly fine tannin. The "Grange" should be given a few more years for the wood to integrate. Then it will also be a 100-point wine.
The place of origin and "spiritual home" of the Penfolds Winery is the Magill Estate, just a few minutes from Adelaide. in 1844, Christopher and Mary Jenfeld planted vine cuttings that they had taken with them on their trip to Australia.
