Penfolds St. Henri Shiraz 2016
The 2016 vintage has produced fantastic fruit. This year, 95% Shiraz was blended with 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. As has been the tradition at "St. Henri" since the 1950s, 100% of the fermented wine was aged in barrels more than 50 years old. This removes the acidity and tannin of fresh wood from the wine and allows a completely different fruit to shine through right from the start. Nevertheless, the "St. Henri" has the potential to age for decades. The 2016 is currently reminiscent of five spices, peat and dried wood, some moss and rock. Ripe fruit of plums, raspberries and blueberries, complemented by mocha, allspice and cloves. On the palate, the Shiraz is dense and full-bodied with chalky tannins that offer substance for decades to come.
