Spottswoode Estate
The roots of what is now Spottswoode Estate in St Helena in the Napa Vallay go back to 1872, when German settlers originally bought land for a summer residence and planted the first vines.
No question, the first horse in Spottswoode's stable is clearly the "Estate Cabernet Sauvignon'. But the "Sauvignon Blanc' also deserves attention. One of the world's rare "Super Sauvignons' is the Spottswoode "Sauvignon Blanc', wrote the American wine author Karen MacNeil in analogy to the Supertuscans, the top wine legends of Tuscany. It has been produced since 1984, with grapes from both Napa Valley and Sonoma County. 96% Sauvignon is complemented by 4% Sémillon. Fermentation takes place in steel, wood, amphora and concrete tanks. The result is a highly complex, multi-layered, fruity Sauvignon Blanc full of tension. Lime and grapefruit, yellow and white peaches, plus a hint of spice from the oak and salty minerality. Indeed, a "super Sauvignon'!
