It is a great pleasure to stand in the winemakers' cellars when they offer us one of their finest barrels. This is exactly what happened with Rudolf "Rudi? May in Retzstadt. The man who, together with his son Benedikt, runs one of the top three Silvaner estates in Franconia and is celebrated both nationally and internationally for his style, has bottled a Silvaner Alte Reben from Retzstadt for us that is simply sensational. He has named it "Retzbach?, as this is the stream that influences the vineyards defined by the shell limestone. This has imparted a striking, subtly electrifying minerality and structure to the Silvaner, which was matured in large oak barrels. The Mays have distilled the aromas down to their essence: smoke, a stony and herbaceous spice, and a delicate, bright, singing fruit.
