Penfolds Grange 2022

Decanter awarded the 2022 Grange 100 points. It was a cool year: hail in spring cut the yields, while a mild summer let the small berries ripen slowly and evenly. 97 % Shiraz and 3 % Cabernet Sauvignon spent 18 months in new American hogsheads. The nose offers cedar and peony, blackberry and sloe, liquorice, black olive, and a smoky trace that recalls a peaty Islay whisky. On the palate young and unruly, pushing ahead like a steam machine, plenty of power, a lively line of acidity, silken tannin and that depth underneath it all. We are putting it away, for two decades and more.
