On a whim, we bought the whole barrel straight from the vineyard. The first vintage of HERRENTROST from winemaker Michi Malat, and straight from the exceptional 2021 vintage. On the nose, delicate stone fruit, papaya spice and a hint of freshly mown grass. On the palate, it offers delicate yellow fruit aromas with a hint of yellow pepper. White pepper and a salty, mineral finish; the wine has an elegant acidity and remains juicy and brilliant from start to finish.

The history of the Malat Winery in the Kremstal dates back to the 18th century. That amounts to almost 300 years of wine-making expertise, from which Michael Malat still benefits today: “Because every vintage is different, there’s no set formula. When it comes to making decisions, the experience of my predecessors is very helpful. Perhaps someone faced a similar situation, tried something out – and the result has been passed down.”
