Louis Roederer
Louis Roederer is one of the last great Champagne houses still owned by the family. When the namesake inherited the estate in 1833, his aim was to expand it and integrate all stages of production. In the middle of the 19th century, almost all other producers bought grapes. Contrary to the spirit of the times, Roederer bought selected Grand Cru plots, established the idea of terroir and thus prepared the ground for a completely new understanding of quality. Just one generation later, Roederer champagne was supplied as far afield as the USA and the Russian Tsar's court.
From an early stage, Roederer has stood for a diversity of crus, parcels, grape varieties and microclimates in order to produce specific wine characteristics - almost as we know it from Burgundy.
The vineyards are located in the classic growing areas of the mountains around Reims, the Marne Valley and the Côte des Blancs. It extends over 240 hectares with a total of 410 plots, some of which are cultivated biodynamically. In order to create a champagne "made to measure" from this diversity, the hand-picked grapes from each individual plot are vinified separately.
In the classic cuvée, Chardonnay provides minerality and elegance. Pinot Noir provides structure and ageing potential. Pinot Meunier rounds off with a flattering note.
