2022 Bordeaux - best ever?!

The 2022 Bordeaux vintage will soon be arriving in our warehouse and the categorisation of this vintage of the century is very clear to us . . . right at the top!

by Rudolf Goetz

It's not so much about individual criteria or even individual criticism. Of course, this vintage was (rightly) showered with praise and top ratings. But this is about something else. The wines are so great in their entirety. There has never been such intensity, elegance, balance and sensuality . . . at least in the last 30-50 years.

There are reasons for all this, of course. It is no coincidence that the people of Bordeaux are increasingly focussing on biodynamic cultivation. This has had many effects. The vines are more resistant to pests and capricious weather due to climate change. The 2022 vintage in particular showed this. The climatic conditions were quite exceptional and the end result was a breathtaking and almost perfect vintage.

The technical changes of recent years have contributed to this. The predominant destemming, parcel-specific fermentation and greater precision in the vineyard and cellar have now led to qualities that were hardly conceivable 20-30 years ago.

i was sometimes literally speechless at the tastings!

The 2022s will be ready to drink earlier than many of the blockbuster vintages of recent years and will still mature forever.

In the end, despite the great balance of the vintage as a whole, what persuaded me to call this the best vintage (that I know of) was the top 20. Almost all the wines benefited from the conditions mentioned. But châteaux such as Léoville Las Cases, Canon, Montrose, Les Carmes Haut Brion, Lafite Rothschild or Figeac have produced wines that almost exceed the 100-point system and have raised the level to a higher level.

How can this vintage be compared?

Perhaps with a combination of the concentration and complexity of the 2016 with the sensuality and florality of the 2020. We are all aware that the 2022 is not cheap. Nor can it be with this outstanding quality. But if you don't have it, then you're simply missing the best of all the vintages you want to have in your cellar!

Dear Bordeaux lovers,

it is a special pleasure for us to welcome you on Tuesday, 18 November 2025
between 16:30 and 19:30 for
a Bordeaux ARRIVAGE tasting 2022
in the Hanse Lounge Hamburg.

Château Lafite-Rothschild

There are supposed to be people who have no interest whatsoever in wine. And even they "of course" know the name "Lafite-Rothschild" and know that it is one of the most famous wineries of all. Some may also have picked up that a bottle from the estate of Thomas Jefferson fetched a price of 160,000 dollars at an auction in 1985.

Château Troplong Mondot was founded in the 18th century. More recently, it was the late Christine Valete who helped the château to new fame with her commitment from the 1980s onwards. Together with oenologist Michelle Roland, she led Troplong Mondot to the top. This was followed in 2006 by the promotion to the Premiers Grands Crus Classés.
