South Australia - Barossa Valley, Australia, Rotwein, Shiraz 0.75 l
The amount of new French wood used for this single-varietal Shiraz from the Barossa Valley varies from year to year. In 2020 it is 80 % plus 20 % one-year-old barrels. The 2020 "RWT" is "a brilliant triad of intense fruit, balanced tannins and this noble oak". This is how James Halliday summarises it in his 97-point rating. Robert Parker even gives it 98 points. The "BIN 798" is a grandiose, opulent powerhouse whose blend of dark fruit, spices and wood seems to explode on the palate at the moment. Over time, the complex elements will interweave and the wine will become even deeper.
The place of origin and "spiritual home" of the Penfolds Winery is the Magill Estate, just a few minutes from Adelaide. in 1844, Christopher and Mary Jenfeld planted vine cuttings that they had taken with them on their trip to Australia.
