The "RWT", the original abbreviation for "Red Wine Trial", comes exclusively from the Barossa Valley and matures exclusively in French oak. This distinguishes it from most other Penfolds wines, which is why it was first experimented with in the 1990s. Since the 1997 vintage, this is no longer a "trial", but a fixed component of the portfolio. The 2018 is a magnificent wine from an equally magnificent vintage in the Barossa Valley. It is bursting with red and black berry fruit, vanilla, Indian spices, the finest oak and umami. On the palate it is opulent and complex with impressive concentration and complexity, waves of the finest acidity and a perfect tannin structure.
