Cloudy Bay is nothing less than the origin of the New Zealand wine phenomenon. Its Sauvignon Blanc established a new style worldwide – and remains a benchmark for Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc to this day. Temperature-controlled, cool fermentation, predominantly in stainless steel, and the use of selected yeasts to achieve a precisely defined aromatic profile – this is the recipe for success that has since been widely copied. To add depth and complexity, around 5 per cent is fermented at a higher temperature in oak barrels – and a further small plot is fermented with indigenous yeasts. In 2023, too, this delivers the beguiling Cloudy Bay fruit medley of honeydew melon, passion fruit and cassis leaves, complemented by tomato leaves and fresh grass, in the usual perfect balance and great class.
