Luddite Saboteur rot Südafrika - Walker Bay 2022

Niels and Penny Verburg farm their vines on a hill above Bot River, where the nearby Atlantic keeps the nights cool. The Saboteur is the free-spirited side of the house: 52 % Shiraz, 21 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 15 % Mourvèdre and 12 % Grenache. Cabernet, Grenache and Mourvèdre ferment in open bins, the Shiraz in steel tanks, after which each parcel spends twelve months in barrel separately. The nose offers cassis, cranberry and violet, with pepper, dried herbs and a touch of cured meat. The palate is densely packed with fruit, the tannin crunchy, a juicy freshness keeping the wine light on its feet. Christian Eedes (Winemag) awards 93 points. For us an honest Cape red that works off the grill just as well as over a long evening at the table.
