Opus One Napa Valley 2023

Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi set out in 1979 to make a wine of world rank in Napa. Opus One brings Bordeaux craft to Oakville terroir, grown on the estate's own vineyards around the winery. In 2023 the vines were farmed regeneratively for the first time. Native yeast fermentation in stainless steel, a portion in amphora, then 19 months in French oak. 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. The fruit comes through clearly, herbier and cooler than last year, with violet, graphite and a hint of liquorice. On the palate cassis and elderberry, black pepper, silky tannin. A wine with edges, and everything in its place. We like these cool vintages with freshness and structure, this one has a great future ahead.
