Mailly Grand Cru is one of the few Champagne houses whose vines sit entirely within a single Grand Cru. Seventy hectares across 35 lieux-dits on the north-facing slopes of the Montagne de Reims, farmed by the village growers since 1929. Poétique de la Terre is the barrel line built by cellar master Sébastien Moncuit, each edition released in two variations. Variation XVIII.1 is Pinot Noir (100 %), a 2018 base with reserve wines from 2014 to 2017, one third fermented in 228-litre barrels. 63 months on the lees in the chalk cellars, dosage 5 grams. We find deep gold in the glass, toast and brioche on the nose, spicy red fruit behind it. Fleshy Pinot on the palate, calm energy, chalky salinity, a long finish. Just over 3,000 numbered bottles, drinking well now to 2033.

Champagne Mailly Grand Cru

The red grapes from the Marne village of Mailly were already considered "first class" quality in the international classification system established by André Julien in 1816. This was confirmed by the Échelle des Crus rating system. Mailly has enjoyed 100% Grand Cru status without interruption since 1911.
