Deep in the Langhe, where the Nebbiolo for the best Barolo grows, lies the Fontanafredda vineyard. The land was purchased in 1858 by none other than King Vittorio Emanuele II for the wife of his heart, Rosa Vercelana.
Since 2010 at the latest, when Oscar Farinetti and Luca Baffigo Filangieri took over the winery, it has once again become one of the greats of Piedmont.
The large Fontanafredda estate includes a small hunting lodge, which the king gave to his beloved "La Bela Rusin". The modern Barolo is said to have been created there in 1870 under the guidance of French oenologist Louis Odart.
The winery has experienced highs and lows over the years, was visionary when the first concrete fermenters were imported in 1887, but has also experienced difficult times. But with Oscar Farinetti and Luca Baffigo Filangieri, Fontanafredda has experienced a unique renaissance. All the old habits were cut away, the cellar was modernised and the 120 hectares of vineyards were gradually converted so that the first certified organic harvest could be carried out for the 160th anniversary.
Today, the winery has a fantastic portfolio of vineyards as well as a unique cellar with mature wines and vintages dating back to 1961.
