Benjamin Leroux is a phenomenon. Originally from Beaune, but not born into a family of winegrowers, he became estate manager at Comte Armand in his mid-twenties and has since become world-famous for his own wines.
Although Benjamin's parents both come from Beaune, they did not run a winery there, but a flower shop. Nevertheless, Benjamin grew up with wine and was so fascinated by it from an early age that he decided to first attend agricultural college and then study oenology. Prior to this, he completed an internship with Pascal Marchand, who ran the Comte Armand winery in Pommard at the time. This internship was to be decisive for his future career. He learnt the basics of organic and biodynamic cultivation from him, and it was he who later suggested Leroux as his successor at the renowned winery. Until 1999, he worked at Domaine Drouhin in Oregon, at Cos d'Estournel, deepened his aversion to Sauvignon Blanc in New Zealand, followed Louis Jadot's call and shortly afterwards moved to Comte Armand. He stayed there for 15 years and in recent years built up his side business, which became full-time in 2007.
Today, Benjamin Leorux owns an organically certified vineyard with eight hectares of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Aligoté. This includes vineyards from Chassagne-Montrachet to Gevrey-Chambertin on the Côte in all grades. Through Maison Leroux, he sources exclusively organically or biodynamically produced grapes from long-term partners.
The white grapes are pressed whole, fermented spontaneously in tanks, barrels or vats and matured for 12 to 22 months. For the red wines, Leroux chooses between 0 and 80% whole bunches, depending on the vintage and plot. Here, too, the wines are fermented spontaneously at room temperature and matured in vats and barrels. The maximum proportion of new wood is 30%. Leroux's wines have a lot in common with this likeable and witty winemaker. They are spontaneous, open, friendly, complex and develop excellently.
