Winemaker Juan Carlos López de Lacalle has been running the over 100-year-old winery in Artazu in the Navarra region since 1996. Since then, he has been breathing new life into the "worn-out vineyards" and the "almost lost heritage". His focus is on terroir-influenced, single-varietal Grenache wines.
Grenache traditionally dominates the entire growing region. López de Lacalle now has around 42 hectares in the villages of Artazu and San Martín de Unx. "Brown limestone soils, which alternate with clayey limestone soils and clayey sandy soils, as well as the extreme and contrasting climate are what make this region so special."
The vines are up to 100 years old and produce wines "with a distinctly Atlantic character, with clear colours and lively transparency."
