The Gassier family
Since its foundation in 1982, the wines of Château Gassier have been synonymous with outstanding quality, especially the rosé wines from the Cru Sainte-Victoire.
Provence, between Aix-en-Provence and the Sainte-Victoire mountain range, is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful corners of France. It characterises the landscape and probably the oldest wine-growing region in France. Historically, Provence is the most important region for rosé wines and has been experiencing a real boom in this type of wine in recent years. However, Château Gassier in the Côtes de Provence Sainte-Victoire appellation proves that Provence has much more to offer. The AOC is protected from strong maritime influences in the south by Mont Aurélien and the Sainte-Baume mountain range. The soils consist mainly of limestone and clayey sandstone.
The winery was founded in 1982 by the Gassier family, who come from Barcelonnette in Haute-Provence and have been part of the Provençal aristocracy since 1421. the Gassiers have acquired 40 hectares over the years. In 2004, the Gassiers took on the Jeanjean family as partners. Today, George Gassier manages the organically certified vineyard. The vineyards are characterised by a combination of sand and clay, which provides optimal conditions for Syrah. There are also deep, gravelly soils at the foot of the slopes, which the Cinsault loves, as well as sandy, clayey and very stony soils with a sandstone layer, which are ideal for the Grenache. Added to this is the Rolle grape variety, also known as Vermentino, for the production of rosé and white wines. Provence is one of the few regions that, for historical reasons, is allowed to use a proportion of white grapes for its rosé. Some Ugni Blanc is also used for the house's white wines. Today, the team led by Olivier Souvelain and winemaker Léa Rouyet produces four rosés and one white wine.
