Philipponnat Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut 2021
Champagne Philipponnat
The 2021 "Blanc de Noirs Extra-Brut? is Philipponnat's tribute to Pinot Noir and, by extension, to the house's signature grape variety. It is sourced exclusively from Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards around Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and from the northern Montagne de Reims. Only the first pressing is used; 20 to 40% of the base wines ferment in used barrels, after which the champagne ages on the lees for more than five years. The challenging 2021 vintage yielded small quantities, but very precise lots. In the glass, the wine is correspondingly crisp and clear, with red and yellow fruit, subtle spice, and a chalky note. Despite its Pinot Noir richness, it remains fresh and elegant. The Extra Brut dosage underscores the dry, focused style.
