Rhône wine-growing region

The Rhône wine-growing region is located in south-east France and stretches along the Rhône river from Lyon in the north to almost the Mediterranean in the south. The wines of the Rhône are characterised by their strength, richness and aromas.

The region is divided into two main areas: the northern Rhône and the southern Rhône.

The soils in the Rhône are varied, from granite and slate in the north to limestone, clay and sand in the south.

The red wines of the northern Rhône are known for their dark colour, strong tannins and aromas of black fruit, pepper and spices, while the red wines of the southern Rhône tend to have fruity, spicy and earthy notes. The white wines of the Rhône are often full-bodied and aromatic, with flavours of flowers, stone fruit and honey.
