The Rhône wine region, one of the most diverse wine regions in France, stretches along the River Rhône from Lyon in the north to almost the Mediterranean Sea in the south. From the steep granite slopes of Hermitage to the sun-drenched terraces of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the Rhône covers an enormous expanse.
The region is divided into two main areas: the northern Rhône and the southern Rhône.
The soils in the Rhône are varied, from granite and slate in the north to limestone, clay and sand in the south.
The red wines of the northern Rhône are known for their dark colour, strong tannins and aromas of black fruit, pepper and spices, while the red wines of the southern Rhône tend to have fruity, spicy and earthy notes. The white wines of the Rhône are often full-bodied and aromatic, with flavours of flowers, stone fruit and honey.
