Domaine Francois Gaunoux

"Silently and quietly to perfection"

Domaine François Gaunoux is one of those quiet wine estates in Burgundy whose reputation among connoisseurs is much greater than its public perception. While many famous names from the Côte d'Or are marketed internationally today and achieve top prices at auctions, Domaine Gaunoux has remained remarkably reserved and traditional for decades. This is precisely what makes the estate so special. Claudine Gaunoux set new standards when she took over the winery from her father in 2000: she does not use wood at all and produces her wines entirely in stainless steel vats. The winery is located in Meursault and has top-class parcels in some of the most prestigious locations in the Côte de Beaune, including Meursault Perrières, Genevrières and the monopole Le Clos des Meix Chavaux or Pommard Les Grands Epenots. The family has worked extremely conservatively for generations. The vineyards are worked carefully and with restraint, while the cellar is dominated by traditional methods with long ageing periods and a style that never aims for quick accessibility.

The white wines in particular differ significantly from many modern Burgundy wines. While many of today's Meursaults focus on early openness, creamy texture or an immediate fruity effect, François Gaunoux's wines often appear closed, austere and almost unapproachable in their youth. With maturity, however, they develop enormous depth and a fascinating mixture of nuttiness, herbs, smoke, limestone minerality and a fine oxidised note. Many lovers of classic Burgundy appreciate precisely this development, because the wines are not primarily built on charm, but on structure and tension.
The Domaine's red wines also have this traditional character. They tend to have dark, spicy fruit, present acidity and a firm tannin structure that also requires time. On the one hand, because Pommard always needs more time, on the other hand, because the young wines matured in stainless steel are quite reductive and also need a lot of time before they are ready to drink. But it is precisely this uncompromising attitude that has earned Domaine François Gaunoux cult status among connoisseurs. Those who give the wines their time, however, experience an impressive depth and authenticity.
