Domaine Roulot is without doubt one of the most iconic white wine domains in the world today. Hardly any other winery has shaped the modern understanding of Meursault and Burgundian Chardonnay as much as the Roulot family estate. Although the history of the winery dates back to the 19th century, the real legend only began with Jean-Marc Roulot, who fundamentally reorganised the business from the late 1980s onwards. From a respected but rather regionally recognised estate, he created a reference address for precise, profound and long-lasting white wines, which today enjoy cult status among collectors and sommeliers worldwide.

For seven years, Jean-Marc hesitated to take over the winery, as he actually wanted to become an actor, studied the subject and has actually taken on more than 50 roles to date - not least in "The Wine and the Wind", where he virtually plays himself. The centre of the domaine is in Meursault, the Côte de Beaune commune that stands for great Chardonnay like no other. Unlike many famous neighbouring villages, however, Meursault does not have a Grand Cru. Instead, the appellation's fame is based on its exceptional Premier Cru and Village sites as well as a style that was historically known for its richness, nuttiness and creaminess.

Jean-Marc Roulot has decisively changed this image. His wines still have the depth and texture associated with Meursault, but at the same time appear much more precise, cooler and more mineral than many classic representatives of the region, which were said to have a more buttery style. This made the domaine one of the most important pioneers of the modern Burgundy style, which favours tension, energy and transparency over opulence. The domaine's vineyards include some of the most renowned climats in Meursault, including Perrières, Charmes, Clos des Bouchères and Les Tessons Clos de Mon Plaisir. Perrières in particular is considered by many Burgundy connoisseurs to be the most complete and noble site in the commune - a vineyard whose limestone-rich soils can produce wines of enormous precision and salinity. Roulot's interpretation of this site has been one of the most sought-after white wines in Burgundy for years. But what is particularly remarkable is that even the simpler Village wines and the Domaine's Aligoté often possess a clarity and depth that is only achieved at Premier Cru level elsewhere.

In the vineyard, the domaine works extremely carefully and in harmony with nature. The vineyards are cultivated with a strong focus on soil life, low yields and physiological ripeness, without striving for excessive concentration. The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand, the selection is strict and even in the vineyard, the aim is to emphasise the individual character of each parcel as precisely as possible. The decisive factor here is the idea that Chardonnay should not be characterised primarily by cellar technique, but by origin. It is precisely this understanding that explains the enormous stylistic differentiation between the individual vineyard wines of the Domaine.

In the cellar, Jean-Marc Roulot pursues a decidedly restrained philosophy. The wines are traditionally matured in Burgundian wooden barrels, albeit with a deliberately moderate proportion of new wood. The aim is never an aromatic wood effect, but rather structure and micro-oxidation. At the same time, yeast storage, sulphur and ageing times are handled with extreme precision. The wines usually undergo a long maturation phase, but always remain transparent and clear in their style.

The tension between concentration and lightness is particularly striking:

The wines have substance and depth, but never seem heavy or broad. Instead, they often linger on the palate with salty minerality, fine acidity and an almost floating texture. The influence of the domaine on the international wine scene can hardly be overestimated. Numerous young Burgundy winegrowers have orientated themselves on Roulot's style in recent decades: less new wood, earlier harvest times, more focus on freshness and expression of origin, reductive ageing and as little disturbance, i.e. racking, pumping over, etc. in the cellar as possible. At the same time, the Domaine is one of the producers who have made a significant contribution to Chardonnay being recognised worldwide as a terroir grape variety and not just as a carrier of cellar style or wood.
Today, the wines of Domaine Roulot are among the rarest and most expensive white wines in Burgundy. Demand has dramatically exceeded production for years, with mature bottles fetching top prices at auctions. Nevertheless, the importance of the wine estate is greater than mere cult or market value. Domaine Roulot is an example of what great white Burgundy can be: Precision, sense of place, finesse and tension.
