Egon Müller Winery

“The icon of Saar Riesling”

The Egon Müller – Scharzhof winery is the undisputed leader in German Prädikat Riesling. Hardly any other German winery enjoys a comparable international reputation. The wines from the Scharzhofberg are among the most sought-after and longest-lived white wines in the world and regularly fetch top prices at auctions. Nevertheless, the family-run estate has remained comparatively small to this day and consistently adheres to a philosophy based on patience, precision and uncompromising quality. The estate’s history dates back to 1797. Following the secularisation carried out by Napoleon Bonaparte from 1803 onwards, the family’s ancestor, Jean-Jacques Koch, acquired the former monastic estate of Scharzhof near Wiltingen on the Saar. The estate has remained in the family’s possession ever since. A notable tradition is that the eldest son in each generation bears the name Egon Müller – today, Egon Müller IV is at the helm of the business, representing the sixth or seventh generation of the family. After the Second World War, his father, Egon Müller III, laid the foundations for the winery’s global reputation with an uncompromising philosophy of quality. At the heart of the estate lies the legendary Scharzhofberger, one of the world’s most famous Riesling vineyards. This is complemented by plots in the Wiltinger Braune Kupp and the Wiltinger Kupp. In total, the winery cultivates just around 8.5 hectares of vineyards, planted almost exclusively with Riesling. The steep slopes of Devonian slate, the cool climate of the Saar and the long growing seasons produce wines of exceptional elegance, precision and finesse.

Work in the vineyard is carried out with the utmost care. Yields are deliberately kept low, always remaining below 60 hl/ha, and harvesting is done exclusively by hand – usually in several passes to ensure each plot is harvested at the optimum stage of ripeness. In the cellar, Egon Müller adopts a minimalist approach. Fermentation is predominantly spontaneous, with ageing carried out traditionally in stainless-steel tanks and large, old wooden barrels. The aim is to authentically reflect the character of the vintage and the Scharzhofberg, whilst preserving the exceptional balance between fruit, sweetness, acidity and minerality. The estate is world-famous for its Prädikat Rieslings – ranging from the delicate Kabinett through Spätlese and Auslese to the legendary Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese and ice wines, which are produced only in exceptional years. The estate’s auction wines are among the most expensive in the world.
A characteristic feature is the apparent weightlessness of the wines. Despite their often considerable sweetness, they never seem opulent, but are carried by a vibrant acidity and a crystalline slate minerality. Aromas of citrus fruits, white peach, mirabelle plum, herbs and flint develop, with increasing bottle ageing, into complex notes of honey, beeswax and dried apricots. These are wines worthy of 100 out of 100 points, which age for decades and seem utterly timeless!
