The name Angelo Gaja is inextricably linked with the transformation of Italian viticulture in the 20th century. The family winery in Barbaresco, founded in 1859, was originally a classic regional business - until Angelo Gaja began to radically question the structures in the 1960s and 1970s. At a time when Nebbiolo was often vinified oxidatively and interpreted in a comparatively rustic way, he focussed on drastically reduced yields, strictly selective hand-picking and much more precise cellar work. The decisive innovations included the introduction of temperature-controlled fermentation as well as the targeted use of small wooden barrels - measures that were considered revolutionary in Piedmont at the time and which the young Angelo had learnt about in France. At the same time, Gaja was one of the first to consistently emphasise single vineyard sites, thus changing the understanding of origin in Barbaresco for good. Wines such as "Sori San Lorenzo", "Sori Tildin" and "Costa Russi" are today exemplary of this development: they combine the structure and depth of Nebbiolo with a precision and elegance previously unknown.

It is remarkable that Gaja never stopped at pure modernisation. Time and again, he made decisions that went against the spirit of the times - such as the temporary declassification of his top wines in combination with the integration of international grape varieties in certain projects. This mixture of innovation and independence also characterises his expansion into other regions: In Montalcino (Pieve Santa Restuta) and in Bolgheri (Ca' Marcanda), wineries were created that transferred the understanding of quality from Piedmont without over-moulding the respective terroirs. Stylistically, Gaja's wines represent a rare balance: powerful, structured and deep, but at the same time characterised by an inner tension and transparency that never makes them seem heavy despite their density. As they mature, they develop an enormous aromatic complexity - from floral and spicy notes to earthy and mineral nuances. Today, Gaja is much more than a single winery: it is a benchmark that has changed the way the world looks at Italian wine. Hardly any other name stands so much for the transition from a regionally characterised wine industry to a globally recognised concept of quality - and hardly any other company has shaped this change so consistently and at the same time so independently.
