The Frescobaldi family is one of the oldest winegrowing dynasties in Tuscany, indeed in the whole of Italy. Based on this tradition, they are visionaries who planted the first Merlot in the 1970s and founded the Luce winery together with Robert Mondavi in the 1990s.
If you only stick to tradition, at some point it means stagnation and slow extinction. But the Frescobaldis were always driven by vision and a special pioneering spirit. When Vittorio Frescobaldi met wine legend Robert Mondavi in the early 1990s, they quickly found a common vision for a modern wine-growing project in Tuscany. The two founded a winery near the hotspot of Montalcino, more precisely on the heights of the Val d'Orcia. However, the aim was not to produce a pure Brunello, but a modern version. This is how the winery and the wine called "Luce" came into being. A cuvée of Sangiovese and Merlot, spoilt by the special light of Montalcino, the result of low yields, matured in new barriques.
Lamberti Frescobaldi has managed the winery since 2005, investing further in the vineyards and, in 2016, in a new, almost invisible winery that blends perfectly into the landscape. Today, in addition to the iconic „Luce“, the „Lucente“ from younger vines, the „Lux Vitis“ from Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese and still a classic „Luce Brunello“ are produced here.
