Tenute Cisa Asinari dei Marchesi di Grésy is one of the most traditional and stylistically consistent wineries in Piedmont. The history of the estate dates back to 1650. However, the fame of the estate is closely linked to Alberto di Grésy, who began in 1973 to consistently orientate the historic properties towards top quality. The focal point of the winery is the famous Martinenga vineyard in Barbaresco - a cru laid out in the shape of an amphitheatre, which is now one of the appellation's great historical vintages. Many connoisseurs even regard Martinenga as one of the most complete and elegant expressions of Nebbiolo. This is also emphasised by the fact that the prices of the Nebbiolo grapes from Martinenga have historically always been the decisive factor for the overall prices in Barbaresco.
The family also cultivates other estates in the Langhe region and in Monferrato, producing Barbaresco as well as Barbera, Dolcetto, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. In addition to Martinenga, there is Monte Aribaldo, just two kilometres from Martinenga, La Serra in Cassine del Montferrato and Monte Colombo, not far from La Serra.
The estate has remained famous above all for its classic Barbaresco wines, which for decades have been characterised by a remarkable balance of structure, precision and elegance. While many Piedmontese wineries were heavily influenced by new wood and modern extraction in the 1990s, Marchesi di Grésy has always remained comparatively reserved and terroir-orientated. The wines therefore often have a timeless style: fine red fruit, roses, tar, herbs and spices, supported by a firm but usually very fine-grained tannin structure. The single vineyard wines from Martinenga in particular - such as Camp Gros or Gaiun - enjoy a high international reputation. They combine the aristocratic finesse of Barbaresco with depth and longevity. Older vintages in particular impressively demonstrate why Marchesi di Grésy has been one of the great classic names of Piedmont for decades: The wines mature slowly, develop an impressive complexity and always retain their elegant, almost cool signature. The estate thus exemplifies the traditional side of Piedmont, where greatness comes less from strength than from precision, origin and inner tension.
