It was back in 2002 that Andrée Trapet, Jean-Louis Trapet's wife, decided to continue running her Alsatian family's winery, travelling from Gevrey-Chambertin to Beblenheim every free weekend to do so. Her son Pierre now runs the estate and is attracting attention with his wines.

Andrée Trapet must have had some sleepless nights when she had to decide what to do with her parents' vineyard in Alsace after their death. Firstly because of the grief, then because of the many unanswered questions. After all, together with her husband Jean-Louis Trapet, the native Alsatian runs one of the most famous wine estates in Burgundy. And it is also biodynamic, which means a considerable amount of extra work. Nevertheless, in 2002 she and her husband decided to continue running the vineyard in Alsace. She would not have had the heart to sell the family heritage. After all, the estate includes Grand Cru vineyards such as Sonnenglanz, Schoenenbourg, Sporen and Schlossberg as well as other vineyards in Kientzheim, Ammerschwihr, Riquewihr, Mittelwihr, Zellenberg, Hunawihr and, of course, Beblenheim. The pair have sacrificed countless weekends travelling from Gevrey to Beblenheim to look after the vineyard.

Andrée and Jean-Louis Trapet, with their son Pierre

Eventually, their sons Pierre and Louis grew up and decided to become winemakers too and one day join the Domaines. Pierre took over the Alsatian vineyard with its 17 hectares in 2017. Louis also spends a lot of time in Alsace. At some point, Pierre realised that he liked the down-to-earth Alsace better than Burgundy, which had become too exclusive and chic for him. In the meantime, he has even learnt the Alsatian-Alemannic dialect and has familiarised himself quite intensively with the history of viticulture in Alsace. So he is serious about the Alsatian terroir, and you can see that in his wines. He has developed his own style, which is expressed at all levels, from the estate wines to the single-vineyard wines to the Grand Crus, but above all in the four Macérés, the mash-fermented white wines.
