As a family winery, the roots of the Dr Bürklin-Wolf winery in Wachenheim in the Palatinate can be traced back to 1597. However, it became particularly well known in the second half of the 19th century, when Dr Albert Bürklin married Luise Wolf and the winery took on its current form.

Albert's great-nephew of the same name ran the winery from 1924 to 1979 and carefully expanded it. He was followed by his wife Jutta until their eldest daughter Bettina took over the winery in 1990.

Bettina Bürklin-von Guradze has led the family winery, which at 89 hectares is very large by German standards and steeped in tradition, into a new era. As early as the 1990s, she began converting the excellent vineyard sites, which include 15 top sites such as Kirchenstück, Jesuitengarten, Pechstein and Ungeheuer, into a four-tier Burgundian system. In the early 2000s, the estate turned to biodynamics, in which it was one of the early pioneers. At 90 per cent, Riesling is by far the most important variety, from which all Grosse Gewächse and Erste Gewächse wines are produced. Riesling is complemented by Pinot Blanc, which belongs to the estate like Aligoté belongs to Burgundy.

Today, she manages the winery together with Steffen Brahner, field manager Jan Hock and cellar master Nicola Libelli. The latter realises his aim of creating clear, mineral, fine and complex wines with vibrant power, tension and structure as well as fascinating transparency. They reflect the individual terroirs and can mature superbly over decades.
